Measuring and trade planning

Price range and date range

Two quick measuring tools: the price range shows the distance between two prices (and in percent), the date range shows the number of candles and the time between two points.

The idea in plain words

Often you only need one dimension: how tall a range is (for a breakout target), or how long a pattern or a pause has lasted.

How it is calculated

Click a start and an end point. The price range shades the band between the two prices across the chart; the date range shades the period between the two times.

Price range = end price − start price (and ÷ start price × 100 in percent)
Date range = candles and time between the two points

How to use it

  • Measure a trading range to project a breakout target (the range's height added to the breakout level).
  • Compare how long consolidations lasted before earlier breakouts.

Drawing conclusions

  • A breakout from a range often travels about the height of the range.

Example

A range in GBPUSD from 1.2650 to 1.2800 is 150 pips tall; a close above 1.2800 projects to about 1.2950.

Prices in examples are illustrative.

Watch out for

  • Measured moves are a rule of thumb, not a promise.
