Why it matters

Orders come before production, so they give an early signal of activity. US durable goods orders without transport, and "core" capital goods orders (non-defence, ex aircraft), are a good guide to business investment. Japan's machinery orders play the same role.

How it is calculated

Manufacturers report new orders in money terms each month; the figures are seasonally adjusted. Aircraft orders arrive in large lumps, so they are often excluded.

What changes mean

  • Headline orders swing with aircraft and defence; use the ex-transport or core figures.
  • Several months of rising core orders support investment growth in GDP.

Higher than expected: A stronger figure than expected points to a healthier economy: it usually supports the US dollar and local stocks, and can push bond yields up.

Lower than expected: A weaker figure than expected points to slowing activity: the US dollar tends to soften and markets price in lower rates.

A short history

The US Census Bureau's Manufacturers' Shipments, Inventories and Orders survey has run since the 1950s.
