Why it matters

Import prices pass through to consumer inflation, especially when the South Korean won has weakened. Export prices and the terms of trade (export ÷ import prices) show how much a country earns for what it sells, which matters for commodity exporters such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

How it is calculated

Prices of traded goods are surveyed or taken from customs data and weighted by trade shares.

Terms of trade = export price index ÷ import price index × 100

What changes mean

  • Rising import prices with a weak currency: more inflation ahead.
  • Improving terms of trade support national income and the currency.

A short history

Terms of trade have been studied since David Ricardo's comparative advantage (1817); the Prebisch–Singer thesis (1950) argued that commodity exporters' terms of trade tend to decline.
