Latest figures

The latest release for SEP, published on 12 October 2026, came in at 6.8%, below the consensus of 7.6%, down from 7.6% the time before.

A lower figure than expected gives the Bank of Japan room to cut or hold rates lower: the Japanese yen tends to soften and bond yields to fall.

Over the last 12 releases it ranged from 2.0% to 7.6%, averaging 4.5%.

Why it matters

Producer prices are an early warning for consumer inflation: when factories pay more for energy and materials, part of the cost reaches shop prices in the following months. They also show profit pressure.

How it is calculated

the Statistics Bureau and the Cabinet Office surveys companies on the prices of representative products at the factory gate; the index is weighted by each product's share of output. Input PPI covers materials and fuel bought; output PPI the goods sold.

PPI change (yoy) = PPI ÷ PPI 12 months ago − 1

What changes mean

  • Input prices rising faster than output prices squeeze margins.
  • A sharp move in PPI often reflects oil and metals; check the core (ex food and energy) version.

Higher than expected: A higher figure than expected makes the Bank of Japan more likely to keep rates high or raise them: it tends to support the Japanese yen and push bond yields up, and is often a weight on stocks.

Lower than expected: A lower figure than expected gives the Bank of Japan room to cut or hold rates lower: the Japanese yen tends to soften and bond yields to fall.

A short history

Wholesale price indexes are among the oldest economic statistics; the US index dates back to 1902 and was renamed the Producer Price Index in 1978.
