Why it matters

Regional releases are an early read of the national number: Germany's states report on the morning of the national flash estimate, and Tokyo's CPI comes about three weeks before Japan's. Traders use them to adjust their expectations.

How it is calculated

The regional statistics office prices the same basket as the national index for its own area; the national figure is close to a weighted average of the regions.

What changes mean

  • If the large regions run hot, expect the national figure above consensus.
  • Regional differences come mostly from energy and housing costs.

Higher than expected: A higher figure than expected makes the European Central Bank (with the Bundesbank) more likely to keep rates high or raise them: it tends to support the euro and push bond yields up, and is often a weight on stocks.

Lower than expected: A lower figure than expected gives the European Central Bank (with the Bundesbank) room to cut or hold rates lower: the euro tends to soften and bond yields to fall.

A short history

Germany publishes state CPIs alongside the national index; Tokyo's index has been watched as a leading indicator of Japanese inflation for decades.
