Chart pattern recognition software reads a price chart the way an experienced analyst does: it finds the swing highs and lows, looks for the shapes traders have studied for a century, such as head and shoulders, double tops, triangles, flags, cups, harmonic patterns and Elliott waves, and draws them for you. Good software goes one step further and tells you how often each pattern actually worked on that market and timeframe.
Step 1: finding the swings
Every pattern is made of turning points. A detector measures how far price must move against a swing before it counts as finished, usually in multiples of the average true range (ATR), so the same rules work on a quiet currency pair and a volatile index. Our pattern wizard looks at three swing sizes at once, so it sees a small flag inside a large triangle.
Step 2: checking the textbook rules
A shape that only looks like a pattern is not enough. Each candidate is checked against the classic rules: shoulders of similar height, a neckline that is not too steep, Fibonacci ratios within tolerance for harmonic patterns, wave 3 never the shortest in an Elliott impulse. Every check is shown with a tick or a cross, so you can see exactly why a pattern was accepted.
Step 3: confirmation and context
Patterns fail more often against the larger trend. The wizard shows whether a setup goes with the long-term trend, whether a candle has confirmed the entry, and whether an Elliott count is backed by the larger waves around it.
Step 4: the trade plan
A pattern is useful when it gives an entry, a stop and targets. The stop is never placed inside the market's normal daily swing, so normal noise does not stop the trade out. Test the size of the position with the position size calculator.
Step 5: the track record
The most valuable part is the history: how many past occurrences of this pattern on this market reached the target first, the average result in multiples of the risk with its confidence interval, and how long trades usually stayed open. Patterns with no edge are labelled so.
Scanning many markets
The market scan runs the same analysis across forex, metals, indices and stocks and lists the strongest, most ready setups first. The pattern insights page shows which patterns have worked best overall.
Pattern recognition does not predict the future; it saves time and adds discipline. Try it on a live EUR/USD chart and practise the setups with paper trading first.
